Abstract
This study identifies the criteria for selecting contractors for construction projects in Sarawak, Malaysia. We used the quantitative research approach and adopted the disproportionate stratified random sampling to collect data from Grade 7 contractors, housing developers, and quantity surveying firms operating within Sarawak. Out of the 336 copies of the questionnaire distributed, only 71 copies of the survey were returned representing 21.13%. We calculated the mean score and relative importance index of all the contractor selection criteria in the questionnaire. It was found that the contractors' management, technical, and financial capabilities are essential in selecting a contractor for a construction project. This study provides a basis for decision making in the selection of the right contractor for any construction project in the Eastern region of Malaysia.
