Pages: 1-13

Abstract

Religion has been proven to be both agent of spiritual and social development. This is obvious in the 21st century Nigeria, where the church as an agent of development, has not only illuminated the society spiritually, but has equally been socially relevant in the health, political, education and economic sectors.  This paper argued that the Chapel of the Resurrection, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria, operates beyond the pulpit through her social transformation activities. It was premised on Emile Durkheim functionalism, which holds that religion has social effectiveness. Data were collected via in-depth interview with, twenty-five (25) people comprising members of the Chaplaincy, Chapel Committee, Sub-Committee and the congregation, which was complemented with empirical evidences of social intervention activities of the church. It was established that the Chapel of the Resurrection, University of Ibadan has transformed the society in spite of some obvious challenges. The need for a reorganisation of the activities was recommended in order to ensure efficiency‎‎‎‎.
